The Great Badjang or Giant Taro

As we try to come up with things to do to make our days productive this Pandemic, a lot of people are leaning towards Gardening. Here in the Philippines, people are becoming crazy with a certain plant. It has large leaves which resembles an Elephant’s ear. Badjang, as we call it here in the Philippines, scientifically called Alocasia macrorrhizos, is a species of flowering plant in the arum family that it is native to rainforests of Island Southeast Asia, New Guinea, and Queensland and has long been cultivated here in the Philippines, many Pacific islands, and elsewhere in the tropics. It is also famous as Giant Taro. The giant taro was originally domesticated in the Philippines, but are known from wild specimens to early Austronesians in Taiwan. From the Philippines, they spread outwards to the rest of Island Southeast Asia and eastward to Oceania where it became one of the staple crops of Pacific Islanders. They are one of the four main species of aroids (taros) cultivated by Austron

Alina Morse: Founder of Zollipops, The Healthy Lollipops

If you say that candy can be hazardous to your health, think again. For these matters, you should be asking an 11-year-old girl how can a Lollipop be healthy for you. Meet Alina Morse, founder of Zollipops, - lollipops that are actually good for your teeth. Now, as we celebrate the International Women's Day, the 11-year-old girl who created Zollipops, “healthy” lollipops, has released a new formula for the beloved treat. According to founder Alina Morse, “I love Women’s Day because it celebrates female entrepreneurs and being part of that community is a huge honor.” Alina, a 4th grader in Wolverine Lake, Michigan, is like any other kid — she loves to dance, sing, and act. The Lechon Factory at Isetann Cinerama Complex, C.M. Recto Manila, Philippines

One rainy afternoon, while we are looking for something to buy somewhere at the Quiapo area, we found ourselves inside the Isetann Cinerama Complex at C.M. Recto trying to look for a decent meal. One particular restaurant caught our attention and their menu is really something, not to mention they are all affordable. The Lechon Factory was established 2016, it was all brand new. Their meals are of course everything about Lechon, and as tempting as it is and having a lot of guilt that we might endure later on, we decided to indulge ourselves and try their best sellers. Lechón is a pork dish in several regions of the world, most specifically Spain and its former colonial possessions throughout the world. The word lechón originated from the Spanish term lechón, referring to a suckling pig that is roasted. Lechón is a popular food in the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, North Sulawesi province of Indonesia, other Spanish-speaking nations in Latin Amer

Food Manufactured in China: All Fake

The first impressions I had when I heard something made in China, it’s all fake… Quality is very poor… A waste of money… Well, I’m talking anything about electronics… What if one day, it came to your doorstep a fake food? Would you consider eating them? Can your curiosity take you the courage to taste it? How in the world China come up with something like this? It is so alarming, not to mention this is way too dangerous… The lack of effective food safety laws in China has created a monster of terrible proportions. It is one thing to replicate designer merchandise and rip off manufacturers, and quite another to dare to imitate Mother Nature and mess with the nutritious ingredients that comprise the staples of human diets. China’s population of 1.3 billion is hungry for both food and wealth, and this combination often nurses corruption, especially when there’s no government watchdog preventing the commission of such crimes. Where can you find the obvious culprits

Five Fabulous Facts You Need To Know About Chocolate

Who doesn’t love chocolate? Hey, be true to yourself buddy, you can indulge yourself every once in a while ;-) As normal as it seems, there are five fabulous facts you need to know about the infamous CHOCOLATE! According to one certain expert, there are chocolate apologists, and there are chocolate advocates. Chocolate advocates like most of us, let’s consider ourselves as health conscious people, however, consider chocolate a bona fide health food, and actively seek out ways to include it in our diets for both the hedonic pleasure it provides as well as for its health benefits. 1.  Chocolate is health food for the heart. Regular chocolate intake has been associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease -- including events like heart attack and stro

The Future of Food: World's First Test-Tube Burger

To all health-conscious people, eating meat is definitely a no-no. Though, research shows that we all need meat for its protein content, there were still people who prefer to eat non-meat meals, they are the vegetarians. However, on a recent experiment by a group of scientists, they have successfully cultured a laboratory-grown beef. Scientists unveiled the world's first lab-grown beef burger, serving it up to volunteers in London in what they hope is the start of a food revolution. The team in Maastricht took cells from organic cows and placed them in a nutrient solution to create muscle tissue. They then grew this into small strands of meat, 20,000 of which were required to make the burger. The costs of cultured beef are likely to fall as more is produced and the team claim, although it is very expensive, it could be available in supermarkets within 10 to 20 years. Proponents of test tube meat cite a variety of reasons for why it is worth supporting, from animal

The Golden Rice and It's Health Benefits

When I first heard the idea, I admit, I was a bit curious and confused at the same time. First thing is, why is it orange in colour? The other thing is, how in the world they created a golden rice? According to Wiki, by definition, Golden rice is a variety of Oryza sativa rice produced through genetic engineering to biosynthesize beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A, in the edible parts of rice. The research was conducted with the goal of producing a fortified food to be grown and consumed in areas with a shortage of dietary vitamin A, a deficiency which is estimated to kill 670,000 children under 5 each year. By the addition of three beta-carotene biosynthesis genes, Golden Rice differs from its parental strain. In the year 2000, the scientific details of the rice were first published in Science, the product of an eight-year project by Ingo Potrykus of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and Peter Beyer of the University of Freiburg. Golden rice was considered a signific
