Asteroid to Pass Earth June 27, 2011

On Monday, June 27, 2011 at 9:30 pm Manila time, an asteroid which is 5 - 20 meters in diameter will pass on Earth as close as 12,000 kilometers. NASA or the United States' National Aeronautics and Space Administration reveals this event on their website last Friday. The discovery team of NASA's Near Earth Object Project Office based at Socorro, New Mexico found the space rock and they named it "Asteroid 2011 MD". "An orbital analysis indicates there is no chance it will actually strike Earth" according to them. According to NASA, Asteroid 2011 MD "will reach its closest Earth approach point in extreme southern latitudes, in fact over the southern Atlantic Ocean". They also said that, "The incoming trajectory leg passes several thousand kilometers outside the geosynchronous ring of satellites and the outgoing leg passes well inside the ring". The asteroid will also miss the many satellites circling the planet as it comes in. Usin

Total Lunar Eclipse

June 16, 2011! A group of friends decided to amaze themselves and witness the total lunar eclipse which the experts say that it will take another 30 years to witness the same phenomenon... With the aid of a digital camera (wish I had myself a DSLR, well I will have soon), we rush on the streets as early as 1:30 AM to to see the full moon turns into reddish color. It is really amazing! According to experts, as shown on the picture below, the full moon turns red as it passes through the umbra or the full shadow of the earth caused when the Sun, Earth and Moon aligns as Earth as the center. The eclipse actually lasted from 2:00 AM until 4:00 AM. This is not much but try to enjoy these pictures we've taken during the eclipse ;-) Once every 30 years? We're so glad to witness such phenomenon, the universe is really such a mystery... We've add another picture taken from the net... Enjoy ;-) Cheerio!

Century-old Tablet Serves as a Warning in Japan

"High dwellings are the peace and harmony of our descendants. Remember the calamity of the great tsunamis. Do not build any homes below this point." Short, yet very informative! These were words written in a century-old tablet erected at the hamlet of Aneyoshi, Iwate Prefecture Northern Japan. A simple advice to the people so they will save themselves into further tsunamis that will hit the country. Hundreds of these tablets dots the coastline of Japan, some were 600 years old. All in all, they serve as a warning system for the country, where as far as we know is a repeated target of both earthquakes and tsunamis over the century. Though some of these warning tablets have no indications where to build really. Some of it simply stands there, or stood until a tsunami washed them away. One tablet reads "If an earthquake comes, beware of the tsunamis", but well of course, in the days of modern life, who will remember? For the record, there are more than 12,

The Fragile Ozone Layer

According to UN weather agency, due to the harmful chemicals and a cold winter, the depletion of the ozone layer shielding Earth from damaging ultraviolet rays has reached an unprecedented low over the Arctic this spring. According to WMO or World Meteorological Organization, the Earth's fragile ozone layer in the Arctic region has suffered a loss of about 40 percent from the start of winter until late March, exceeding the previous seasonal loss of about 30 percent. The Geneva-based agency blamed the loss on a buildup of ozone-eating chemicals once widely used as coolants and fire retardants in a variety of appliances and on very cold temperatures in the stratosphere, the second major layer of the Earth's atmosphere, just above the troposphere. According to the UN scientists, Arctic ozone conditions vary more than the seasonal ozone "hole" that forms high in the stratosphere near the South Pole each winter and spring, and the temperatures are always wa
