BYD eMAX 9 DM-i Review: Price, Design, Performance, Reliability and Everything You Need to Know

As an electric auto critic, I have always been interested in vehicles that try to bridge the gap between traditional gasoline motoring and the rapidly changing world of electrification. The BYD eMAX 9 DM-i is particularly interesting because it does not attempt to be a conventional electric vehicle. Instead, it takes the plug-in hybrid approach and combines electric driving with a gasoline-powered generator, giving buyers the quietness and efficiency of an EV while retaining the long-distance flexibility of a conventional powertrain.

In the Philippines, I think this formula makes a lot of sense. Charging infrastructure is improving, but long-distance family travel still demands flexibility. The eMAX 9 DM-i is designed precisely around that reality: seven seats, luxury-car comfort, substantial electric range for daily driving, and a gasoline-assisted system for longer journeys.

As of July 28, 2026, the official Philippine price list places the BYD eMAX 9 DM-i Advanced at ₱2,778,000 and the Premium at ₱3,098,000. Prices can change and provincial pricing may be higher because of logistics and transportation costs.

BYD eMAX 9 DM-i: What Exactly Is It?

The BYD eMAX 9 DM-i is a seven-seat luxury plug-in hybrid MPV positioned above the eMAX 7 in BYD's Philippine lineup. It uses BYD's Super DM-i technology, a system designed to prioritize electric propulsion while using a gasoline engine-generator when additional energy is required.

That distinction is important. I would not describe the eMAX 9 DM-i as a traditional hybrid in the same sense as a conventional gasoline-electric vehicle. It is much closer to an EV that carries a gasoline energy source for extended travel.

The Philippine Advanced variant uses front-wheel drive, a permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor producing 271 PS and 315 Nm, a 1.5-liter turbo high-efficiency generator, and a 20.4-kWh BYD Blade Battery. Official specifications list a 95-km NEDC electric driving range and 945-km combined range.

The Premium is the more luxurious version and increases the electric range substantially. BYD Philippines lists 170 km of NEDC range, 271 PS and 315 Nm, while its larger battery and additional equipment push the vehicle into an even more premium category.

BYD eMAX 9 DM-i Price in the Philippines

Price is one of the first things I would consider because this is not an inexpensive family MPV.

The current official Philippine pricing is:

  • BYD eMAX 9 DM-i Advanced – ₱2,778,000
  • BYD eMAX 9 DM-i Premium – ₱3,098,000

That means there is a ₱320,000 difference between the two versions.

When the eMAX 9 was initially launched in the Philippines, pricing was lower, with published launch figures of ₱2.678 million for the Advanced and ₱2.998 million for the Premium. The current official BYD price list, however, shows the updated 2026 SRPs above, so I would use the latest official figures when calculating a purchase budget.

At nearly ₱3.1 million for the Premium, the eMAX 9 DM-i enters a market where buyers can consider premium Japanese and Korean MPVs. That makes the question more complicated than simply asking whether the BYD is affordable. I would ask whether its technology, space and equipment justify the price.

For me, the answer is largely yes, particularly if the buyer values technology and electric driving.

Exterior Design: Big, Elegant and Surprisingly Conservative

One of the first things I noticed about the BYD eMAX 9 DM-i is that BYD did not make it excessively futuristic.

Some electric vehicles look like concept cars that accidentally escaped onto public roads. The eMAX 9 is different. It has a large, imposing front grille, substantial LED headlights and tasteful metallic trim. The design gives the MPV plenty of road presence without becoming visually excessive.

The vehicle measures 5,145 mm long, 1,970 mm wide and 1,805 mm tall, with a 3,045-mm wheelbase. Ground clearance is 157 mm, while the turning radius is 5.7 meters.

Those numbers tell me something important: this is a genuinely large vehicle.

The long wheelbase creates the foundation for the spacious cabin, while the relatively wide body gives it a planted appearance. At the rear, the full-width-style taillight treatment and large tailgate emphasize the width of the vehicle.

I particularly like the restrained approach. BYD has managed to make the eMAX 9 look expensive without covering every surface with unnecessary styling details.

Interior: This Is Where the eMAX 9 DM-i Makes Its Strongest Argument

If the exterior is conservative, the interior is where the eMAX 9 becomes much more interesting.

The vehicle is designed around seven occupants in a three-row configuration, and the cabin emphasizes comfort rather than simply maximizing the number of seats.

The Premium version is particularly impressive. BYD describes it as offering premium captain's chairs with massage functionality, generous legroom and a built-in refrigerator. It also gets an extensive collection of comfort and convenience features intended to make the second row feel more like a lounge than an ordinary MPV seat.

This is exactly the type of vehicle where the second row matters.

If I were buying an eMAX 9 primarily for family use, executive transportation or long-distance road trips, I would spend considerable time sitting in the second-row captain's chairs during the test drive. The driving experience is important, but in a luxury MPV, passenger comfort is arguably even more important.

Cargo flexibility is another strong point. BYD lists 470 liters of luggage capacity and up to 2,036 liters depending on configuration.

That makes the eMAX 9 more practical than its luxurious image might suggest.

Technology and Features

BYD has clearly used technology as one of the main selling points.

The eMAX 9 can be equipped with a large infotainment display, smartphone connectivity, multiple charging ports, wireless charging and advanced cabin controls. Depending on the variant, buyers also get significantly more sophisticated driver-assistance equipment.

The Premium model is particularly well equipped with BYD's DiPilot advanced safety suite. Features include a 360-degree camera with See-Through Mode, lane-departure assistance, blind-spot detection and front and rear collision warnings. BYD also lists eight airbags for the Premium.

The 360-degree camera is something I consider particularly valuable on a vehicle this large. At more than 5.1 meters long, the eMAX 9 is not something I would want to maneuver around tight Philippine parking structures without assistance.

Performance: More Than Enough for a Luxury MPV

I don't expect a large luxury MPV to drive like a sports sedan, but the eMAX 9 DM-i has enough electric motor performance to make that comparison unnecessary.

The electric motor produces 271 PS and 315 Nm, while the Advanced variant can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 8.4 seconds. The Premium is listed at 8.5 seconds on BYD's Philippine website.

That is quick enough for a vehicle designed primarily to transport families.

What I like about electric propulsion in an MPV is the immediate torque. A large vehicle can sometimes feel lazy with a traditional naturally aspirated gasoline engine, particularly when fully loaded. Electric motors provide their response immediately, making urban driving and overtaking much easier.

Ride and Handling

This is an area where the eMAX 9 has impressed me more than I initially expected.

The suspension consists of MacPherson struts at the front and a four-link independent setup at the rear, with disc brakes on all four corners.

A Philippine road test published by Inquirer Mobility reported that the eMAX 9 remained composed over badly maintained roads and that the Premium's adaptive dampers helped control the large MPV. The same test reported approximately 15 km/L under difficult road conditions.

That result should not be treated as a universal fuel-economy figure because real-world consumption depends heavily on battery charge, driving style, traffic and road conditions. Still, it demonstrates why the DM-i architecture can be attractive for Philippine driving.

Another road test also praised the eMAX 9's ability to absorb rough surfaces, particularly in Comfort mode.

From an enthusiast's perspective, I would not call this a driver's MPV. But I don't think that is the objective. Its strengths are stability, refinement, quietness and passenger comfort.

Electric Range and Charging

This is perhaps the most important technical aspect of the eMAX 9 DM-i.

The Advanced version has a 20.4-kWh Blade Battery and a claimed 95-km NEDC electric range, while the official combined range is 945 km.

The Premium uses the larger battery and has a claimed 170-km NEDC electric range.

I would always treat official range figures as laboratory benchmarks rather than guaranteed real-world distances. Traffic, air-conditioning use, passenger load, speed and weather can all reduce actual range.

Nevertheless, even the Advanced's electric range can potentially cover a significant portion of a typical daily commute without using gasoline, assuming the vehicle is charged regularly.

The presence of Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) is another feature I appreciate. BYD says the system can power appliances such as fans, rice cookers and lights.

For the Philippines, that is not merely a gimmick. It can be useful for outdoor activities and potentially during power interruptions.

Reliability: Should You Trust the BYD eMAX 9 DM-i?

This is where I want to be particularly careful as an auto critic.

The eMAX 9 DM-i is relatively new in the Philippine market, so I would not claim that we already have a decade-long reliability record for this exact model. That simply does not exist.

However, the underlying concept of using an electric motor for propulsion combined with a gasoline engine-generator has some theoretical advantages. Electric motors have fewer moving parts than conventional combustion drivetrains, while the gasoline engine does not necessarily have to behave like the sole source of propulsion.

BYD's Blade Battery is another important component. The Advanced uses a 20.4-kWh Blade Battery according to official Philippine specifications.

But reliability isn't just about the battery and motor. It also depends on software, electronics, cooling systems, suspension components, air-conditioning systems, sensors and—perhaps most importantly for Philippine owners—the quality of after-sales service.

That is why I would advise potential buyers to investigate the nearest authorized BYD dealership, parts availability, maintenance support and warranty terms before signing the purchase agreement.

In other words, I consider the eMAX 9 DM-i promising rather than proven when it comes to long-term model-specific reliability.

Advanced vs Premium: Which One Would I Buy?

If my budget were around ₱2.8 million, the Advanced would already be a compelling proposition.

It gives me the same fundamental eMAX 9 concept, seven-seat practicality, Super DM-i technology, 271 PS, 315 Nm, 95-km NEDC electric range and 945-km combined range.

However, if I could comfortably stretch to ₱3.098 million, I would strongly consider the Premium.

The additional ₱320,000 buys a more substantial luxury experience, including the larger battery, longer claimed electric range and additional premium equipment. The Premium's cabin and safety technology are more aligned with the reason many people buy a luxury MPV in the first place: comfort.

Final Verdict

After examining the BYD eMAX 9 DM-i price, design, performance, technology, efficiency and reliability considerations, I see it as one of the most interesting premium MPVs available to Philippine buyers who want to move toward electrification without completely depending on charging infrastructure.

Its biggest strengths are obvious: space, luxury, electric driving capability, strong performance, impressive technology and long-distance flexibility.

The design is sophisticated without being overly futuristic. The interior is spacious and luxurious, particularly in Premium specification. The electric motor provides smooth and immediate performance, while the Super DM-i system removes much of the range anxiety associated with a pure EV.

Its biggest weaknesses are equally important. The vehicle is expensive, enormous for tight urban environments, and its long-term model-specific reliability has not yet been established over many years. The published range figures also should not be confused with guaranteed real-world results.

As an electric auto critic, my conclusion is that the BYD eMAX 9 DM-i is not simply an MPV with an electric motor—it is a convincing attempt to redefine what a family luxury vehicle can be in the transition toward electrification.

At ₱2,778,000 for the Advanced and ₱3,098,000 for the Premium, it isn't cheap. But when I look at what buyers are getting—seven seats, substantial space, premium comfort, electric driving capability, V2L, advanced safety technology and the freedom to use gasoline for long-distance travel—I think the eMAX 9 DM-i has a legitimate argument for its price.

For buyers who frequently carry family members, travel long distances and want to experience EV-like driving without committing to a full battery-electric vehicle, the BYD eMAX 9 DM-i is one of the most compelling premium plug-in hybrid MPVs I would put on a test-drive shortlist in the Philippines today.

As of this writing, price and specifications referenced above are based on BYD Cars Philippines information available in 2026 and may change without prior notice. Actual range, fuel economy and performance can vary according to driving conditions, load, traffic, temperature and driving style.

Cheerio!
