On Monday, June 27, 2011 at 9:30 pm Manila time, an asteroid which is 5 - 20 meters in diameter will pass on Earth as close as 12,000 kilometers. NASA or the United States' National Aeronautics and Space Administration reveals this event on their website last Friday. The discovery team of NASA's Near Earth Object Project Office based at Socorro, New Mexico found the space rock and they named it "Asteroid 2011 MD". "An orbital analysis indicates there is no chance it will actually strike Earth" according to them. According to NASA, Asteroid 2011 MD "will reach its closest Earth approach point in extreme southern latitudes, in fact over the southern Atlantic Ocean". They also said that, "The incoming trajectory leg passes several thousand kilometers outside the geosynchronous ring of satellites and the outgoing leg passes well inside the ring". June 16, 2011! A group of friends decided to amaze themselves and witness the total lunar eclipse which the experts say that it will take another 30 years to witness the same phenomenon... With the aid of a digital camera (wish I had myself a DSLR, well I will have soon), we rush on the streets as early as 1:30 AM to to see the full moon turns into reddish color. It is really amazing! According to experts, as shown on the picture below, the full moon turns red as it passes through the umbra or the full shadow of the earth caused when the Sun, Earth and Moon aligns as Earth as the center. The eclipse actually lasted from 2:00 AM until 4:00 AM. This is not much but try to enjoy these pictures we've taken during the eclipse ;-) Once every 30 years?
